Can he really appreciate their struggles?
Please don’t say that there are no Lauans capable of the job as this country has only had Lauans as its PM whenever an indigeneous leader is elected. The greatest all time Fijian statesman – the late Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna – was Lauan. People of tremendous knowledge and business acumen are from Lau.The Ministry of Fijian Affairs should really look into this. I was also amazed to read about the disqualification of Lauans from their own meeting with the excuse that they resided in Suva. Their residing in Suva is by no means accidental or without cause. They are the ones who their people have educated and helped contribute to the development of this country. They have to reside in Suva unless we decide to move the seat of government to Lau.
There were many Suva residents who attended the meeting. So why were Jale and Raivoce refused? I am certain they were chosen by their people as they are the best representatives. Perhaps their biggest disadvantage was that they are well educated and have the ability to judge right from wrong and sit in a meeting without blinkers and earplugs.
The other very important issue is that it is the Lauans in Suva who send money to their relatives in the islands to ensure their families are taken care of and that the relevant obligations are met. Even if a Lauan resides in Suva, he or she remains a Lauan all hs or her life – just as I will remain a kai Cakaudrove all my life.
