Vegetarian diet
Written By : Shalina Sharma Lautoka. I have noticed that a lot of us are under the illusion that a vegetarian diet will not provide us with all the necessary nutrients needed for good health.
This is nothing but a misconception on our part. A carefully planned vegetarian diet will include all the vitamins and minerals including protein, calcium, iron, zinc and omega 3 fatty acids needed by the body to function at its utmost best.
The food sources for these nutrients are milk, cheese, yoghurt, tofu, whole grains (whole wheat bread, pasta, roti, rice, cereals, etc), all kinds of legumes, lentils, dhals, beans and peas, dried fruits (dates, sultanas, etc), all kinds of nuts, seeds (sesame, pumpkin, etc), root crops (cassava, kumala, etc), honey, all Indian spices (cloves, fennel, fenugreek, cinnamon, etc), good quality fats and oils such as olive, sunflower, pure ghee, pure coconut oil and, of course, last but not the least, all kinds of fresh and seasonal fruits and vegetables.
Let’s be smart and go vegetarian.
