What happened to Selai Pridgeon over the weekend was a disgusting abuse of power.
Suzie Yee claims that “senior players should know the rules”. But drawing the analogy between a driver no longer being allowed with the rule that golfers can only play with 14 clubs is ridiculous.
The 14 club rule is a well known rule that golfers come to know when they first start playing. This supposed “new rule” disallowing drivers is of a different nature – it has only been recently instituted. And as president of the FWAGO, Suzie Yee has a duty to inform the lady members around the country of it. Or at least inform the captains of each of the clubs so that they can inform their members.
Surely by paying affiliation fees, that is what members can expect to happen. This can easily be done via a newsletter.
Alternatively, at each tournament there are noticeboards put up at the club house informing players of rules for the particular game.
Why was this new rule not put up on the board?
How on earth can you expect every single individual player to find this out for themselves?
Whether the player is senior, squad member, or beginner, there is a duty to inform them of new rules. This obviously did not happen.
I believe that the FWAGO’s decision to disqualify Pridgeon was one made only to make the association appear correct internationally.
They cannot decide after the game that a rule existed and hold members to it retrospectively. The FWAGO and Suzie Yee need to acknowledge that they have made a mistake, apologise to their number one squad member, and hope that Selai Pridgeon will still play for them.
Finally, the informer – Sylvia Joe. Joe was playing in the same group as Selai Pridgeon on the last day. I find it very puzzling that she did not inform Selai whilst they were out on the course. Instead, she leaves Selai Pridgeon to play her whole game using the club then reports it afterwards. What kind of team player does that?
