Written By : Rajen Naidu. I gather from Fiji media news reports that the present power holders in my home country are planning on passing a law to place further limits on freedom – and in this instance it is to limit media freedom.
This is an indirect assault on the freedom of expression of the people. Some would contend that it is infact a full frontal assault on a fundamental democratic freedom.
Consider the following by way of contrast. In Australia the police gave themselves extra special powers during the Pope’s current visit to arrest protesters who annoyed the pilgrims.
The court ruled against the police and gave the people their democratic right to protest.
A spokesman for the civil liberties group that had petitioned the court said after the ruling that they can now go ahead and annoy and the world’s a better place for it.
I don’t think Australia is a perfect country but I like the freedom the people can enjoy in this country without State interference and coercion.
