Written By : SUN FIJI NEWSROOM. The first road accident for the year was due to over speeding, police revealed yesterday.
Yesterday five people counted their lucky stars after they walked away from an accident in Navua with minor injuries.
Four passengers and a minibus driver were rushed to Navua hospital after the vehicle they travelled in veered off the road and landed in a ditch yesterday morning.
The minibus was travelling from Nadi to Suva and police spokesman Atunaisa Sokomuri said over speeding was the cause of the accident.
Mr Sokomuri said police statistics show that for last year, the main cause of road fatalities or accidents was over speeding.
“We have always advised drivers and road users against over speeding time and again, however, it seems nobody is taking heed of this. Road accidents can be avoided only if people stick within the speed limit,” he said.
He also called on people that hired buses for picnics and other gatherings during this festive season to stick within the required passenger numbers and to avoid the overload of buses as this could lead to accidents.
Meanwhile, people hired buses to spend a day at the beach and upon observation, passenger numbers exceeded the requirement.
