Written By : SERA JANINE. A 12-year-old girl was brutally raped by seven men on Boxing Day according to a report lodged at the Seaqaqa Police Station.
The victim from Bua was visiting relatives in a settlement in Dreketi. She came to spend Christmas.
Police media liaison officer Atunaisa Sokomuri confirmed that police had received the report but details of the incident remained sketchy.
“Police have received a report that a 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped by seven men. At the moment, the investigating officers are still working on the case and details of the incident are yet unclear,” he said.
Seaqaqa police are expected to release more information about the incident today.
Mr Sokomuri has reiterated police advice on child supervision especially during this festive season.
He said they had been advising parents against leaving their children unsupervised or with relatives.
“We advise parents during the holidays keep your children, especially daughters, under strict supervision,’’ he said.
“Our job is to advise parents and guardians on these matters in the hope of preventing incidents such as this from happening.”
Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre coordinator Shamima Ali said the incident was shocking and one which would leave the young girl traumatised for life.
“This is really shocking. This kind of things should be a wake-up call to all males in society. Why is this happening? Men should ask themselves this question,” she said.
“This young girl will now be traumatised for the rest of her life.”
The girl received injuries during the alleged attack and has since been medically examined.
