Written By : SUN FIJI NEWSROOM. The appointment of a substantive Chief Justice and a number of distinguished and learned judges to our courts have vastly reduced backlogs.
In a New Year’s message, Interim Prime Minister Commodore Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama said the appointments have reduced backlogs, improved the administration of justice and further strengthened the rule of law.
“Last year was a successful year dedicated to strengthening the government’s efforts towards achieving the mandate issued by his Excellency our President, Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu Uluivuda.
“All doubts about the legality of the appointment of the interim government by His Excellency was laid to rest by the three- member panel High Court ruling in October,” Mr Bainimarama said.
He said the court ruling validated the actions of His Excellency and the government in taking the many positive steps to achieve the mandate set out by him.
“I know there are some both within and outside Fiji who continue to ignore this ruling. However, what they must realize is that the rule of law requires the adherence, acceptance and compliance with the rulings and decisions of an independent judiciary,” he said.
Mr Bainimarama said to become a mature nation, we must be realistic, hones, united and we must demand to be treated with dignity and be proud of our country.
He said the nation had come to the end of a challenging and successful year and the New Year not only brought further challengers but also hope and opportunities.
Mr Bainimarama added the nation must meet challenges and seize opportunities together as a nation with resilience that we as people of this country have demonstrated over the decades.
