Written By : SERA JANINE. Only with a democratic electoral system in place would elections be held, says interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.
In his New Year’s message to the nation, the military commander said the new electoral system would ensure that the value of individual votes would be the same.
“You must have the right to choose whoever you want and not be bound by ethnic categorisation. The politicians must develop and implement policies that will be good for all in the nation of Fiji, not just for themselves and a selected few,” he said.
He also revealed that the People’s Charter for Change and Progress, which proposed an electoral system change, has been endorsed and they have been directed by President Ratu Josefa Iloilo to implement the charter.
“The (interim) government has already started the implementation of the charter as directed by His Excellency. One such example is the removal of ethnic/racial categorization in Government forms and records,” he said. He thanked those who participated in the three-month charter consultation process.
Cdre Bainimarama said close to 70per cent of the population participated in the process.
It is unclear if the percentage is of the country’s population as a whole or that of the voter population.
He added that over 90per cent of the consultation participants voiced their support for the document and its implementation.
Cdre Bainimarama also thanked traditional leaders for their support of the document, which not only proposed a new electoral system, but also a common national identity for all citizens.
