Written By : RANJEENA DEVI. It’s another difficult year where the poor becomes poorer while the rich gets richer, says Gyan Wati.
Ms Wati a house from Newtown, Nasinu said the prices for the basic items like potatoes, cereals, rice and milk are always going up and it’s making life more difficult.
“We can’t even buy a bottle of juice,” she said.
“My wages from the garment is less than $52 per week and my husband only earns $83 a week. We can only afford to pay for our bus fare to work and groceries that will last us for only a week.”
She said the wages they earn was not enough to cover for all their needs as they have to send their three children to school.
“I don’t know how people will afford to buy groceries when the price will increase. It is very hard now and most parents will not be able to educate their children.”
Ms Wati said she would borrow some past year’s books and uniforms from her relatives and friends so her children can use.
Lami resident Lee Marvin said there was a need for an early election or else the prices of basic food items will go higher and higher.
He said people no longer depend on the supermarkets but to plant more vegetables, root crops and fruits in their gardens.
He said people who are struggling to make ends meet should now start sharing among themselves to cope with the high cost of living. Christine Moeava from Suva said 2009 would bring a lot of suffering to low income earners who would only afford to buy their basic food items.
Mrs Moeava said this would mean more robberies because there would not be enough money for people to survive.
“There will be an increase in breaking in when people will not have enough money to meet their needs” She said the interim government should get their priorities right and be fair to the people.
