Written By : EMONI NARAWA. Maciu Tukana had a reason to greet 2009 when he was named the best U20 player for the Raiwaqa Flyers during their awards night on Wednesday.
The Naceva native from Kadavu said he was surprised when he heard his named being announced as the best player for the U20 category for 2008.
Looking at the highlights of the season he said it was an great to win such an award.
“I was not expecting it and it came as a surprise to me. I felt nervous when my name was announced but it was good to reward oneself for the fine effort and the hard work,” Tukana said.
“2008 was tough, the competition gets tougher each week but I’m happy to be the recipient of this award.”
He thanked all his coaches, managers and advisors for helping he team out during the competition last year.
“I want to thank everyone in my team for the fine effort which contributed a lot to our team’s performance which resulted in winning the category and myself being rewarded the best player.”
“It was through team work that I won this award and I’m dedicating it to my fellow teammates for this new season,” he said.
Tukana first played the sport four years ago and there had been no turning back for the 18-year old as he strived for greater things in the future.
“My goal is to represent the country during the State Championship in Australia and I would give my utmost ability to accomplish my dream.”
He is currently in the extended training squad under the watchful eyes of Jeke Tulivou.
Tukana said he took up the sport as an off season programme from rugby but things changed when he seriously committed himself to it.
Meanwhile in other categories Johansen Keith was named the best Men’s Open player, Semisi Raceba took out the Mixed best Player with Rusiate Uluimoala and Monica Komaisavai being awarded the male and female most valuable player (MVP) and Ratu Tila Kabakoro scooped the overall player’s award during the night.
