Written By : SERA JANINE. School managements have been warned not to use tuition fee assistance grants for other activities.
Interim Minister for Education Filipe Bole said it had been found that some school managements were using these grants for purposes they were not intended for.
He said the main purpose of the review of tuition fee assistance to the primary and secondary school was to reduce the cost of education for parents.
“The tuition fee has substantially increased from the previous levels to what is being paid out now to schools,” said Mr Bole.
“The intention is to assist school managements to purchase necessary teaching and learning resources. Parents and students are not to be levied for those purposes.
“It has been brought to the notice of the ministry that some schools are utilising tuition fees for some other activities and programmes that are not related to the particular school for which the grant was provided. We wish to send out a stern warning to managements and schools to refrain from such dishonest practices.
“If school managements and school heads, prudently utilise the funds provided by government there should not be any need to levy parents for the purpose of providing teaching and learning resources and other recurrent costs.”
