Written By : CHARLOTTE PETERS. Republic of the Fiji Military Forces personnel will not get any back pay, says spokesman Major Neumi Leweni.
He made the comment in response to questions on soldiers receiving their back pay some time this year.
Last year there were reports and speculation that soldiers would receive their back pay in time for the festive season but this did not eventuate as the Finance Ministry and Public Service Commission stated there would be no back pay in 2008.
Major Leweni said there was no truth to claims that soldiers would be receiving their back pay saying there was no such thing.
“The military is not getting any back pay. There is no such thing as back pay for the military,” said Major Leweni.
He said there had been reports of certain organisations getting back pay but this would not happen and civil servants especially the military will not get it.
“I want to clarify that there is no such thing as back pay for the military,” he said.
Meanwhile, public sector unions remain hopeful that the Employment Relations Tribunal will rule in their favour in terms of the 5 per cent pay restoration to be back dated to 2007.
The Confederation of Public Sector Union and Fijian Teachers Association filed trade disputes and in their submissions said the 5 per cent pay cut should be backdated to 2007.
This issue will be called before the Chief Tribunal on January 13- 14 for FTA and January 19-20 for CPSU.
