Yesterday, Fiji Powerlifting Federation president, Eliesa Irava revealed that they have plans to enlist new lifters at the Commonwealth Championships this year.
The FPF is currently on break from training but Irava said they have a few major tournaments lined up for the year. “There are quite a few championships like the World Masters Bench Press, World Juniors, World Masters and the Commonwealth.”
“I’m looking forward to the young lifters for the Commonwealth because they have good chances.”
The only lifter currently training now is super grand mum, Sainimili Turner. Irava said Turner is still in the US preparing herself for the World Masters event. “She is the top women contender for Fiji especially after her performance in 2008.” Apart from Turner Irava said she would also look at other women lifters who perform well to help fly the national flag at the championships.
“We have Suliana Kolitagane and Iva Vunikura.” “For the World Juniors we have Helen Pahulu who is doing well and Lawrence Visanti.”
Irava said the y might look at another two young lifters for the World Juniors to travel with Pahulu and Visanti. Irava confirmed that only their elite members would travel to the world meets unless a new lifter does exceptionally well.
