In his New Year’s message to the nation, interim prime minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said the new electoral system would ensure that the value of individual votes would be the same. He said that individuals must have the right to choose and vote for their political parties.
And former Superviser of Elections Semesa Karavaki said that anybody could come up with every good policy but what was more important was that the electoral system must be designed through a representative process.
“Nothing should be imposed on the people and the electoral system should go through its normal procedures,” he aid yesterday
“People should be given the right to choose and vote what they want. They should given the right to choose the party they think is best and most of all people’s views should be respected.
“Poison trees will always bear a poison fruit.”.
Mr Karavaki asked what was the use of giving the right to choose to an individual when their choice was not respected.
“Views of the people need to be respected as it determines the political destiny,” he said.
“What is the use of giving them right to choose when their individual right is not respected?
“The voice of the people needs to be heard and should be considered.”
