Written By : MACIU MALO. Former national rep Sakeasi Vonolagi has called on the Fiji Rugby Union to stop playing bullying tactics on Digicel 7s coach Waisale Serevi.
The former national 7s skipper said rugby 7s is the only national team sport that has won two world titles for Fiji and the very man behind the two wins was none other than the maestro himself.
And for the FRU to bully (Serevi) around in drawing up his coaching contract by denying him not to play for his country is childish and uncalled for.
The Nameka batman who is known for his tough approach in the rugby paddock said the FRU are making things difficult for themselves which in-turn killed the interest of the die-hard fans in the game they hold dear to their heart.
He said the actions taken by the FRU is too easy to read and they are using lame excuses for their own interests.
“Serevi has indicated his interest for playing for Fiji at the 7s RWC in March and I just don’t know why on earth is the FRU keeps on denying him of his wishes,” Vonolagi said.
“He has been faithfully playing his heart out for Fiji for the last 21 years and has taken Fiji to many memorable victories yet the FRU doesn’t recognize that.
“They (FRU) are saying that Serevi cannot play because his contract says so, but let’s ask ourselves who made the contract.”
“We can easily read between the lines on the treatment that is being done to Serevi.”
“He is known as the best 7s player in the world yet he’s not wanted in his own home.”
“No doubt about it if Serevi is in Australia, New Zealand or any other overseas team he will be included at their world cup team taking into consideration his contribution and experiences in the 7s game.”
The former national flanker said Serevi has gave so much to Fiji rugby and the FRU should at least accommodated his request and to give him a chance to play at the world cup as his last swansong.
Vonolagi said the FRU are damaging the future of the rugby players and another example of ill treatment he singled out was that of Fijian flyer Rupeni Caucaunibuca.
The Fiji Naval officer said for the betterment of Fiji rugby and for the well being of the players the FRU must be honest and enough of personal agendas.
