Written By : SUN FIJI NEWSROOM. Three police officers have been victims of assault by drunken members of the public in just a week.
And the public has been warned that those found guilty will be taken to task.
Police deputy director operation Superintendent Erami Raibe confirmed yesterday that since Christmas Eve, there have been three cases of assault on police officers on duty.
SSP Raibe said police appealed to members of the public to refrain from attacking officers on duty as it is their job to keep the peace.
He said on December 24, last year, a police officer was punched at Wailoaloa Beach in Nadi while attending to a case.
On New Year’s Eve, another police officer was punched in Nadi Town.
SSP Raibe said on New Year’s Day at Tacirua, a group of men assaulted a lone police officer.
“The police appeal to members of the public to respect police offices and support them in upholding the law,” he said.
He said in all cases, accused persons were under the influence of alcohol when they committed the offences.
But SSP Raibe said this was still not an excuse to commit such crime especially on public servants who had a role in providing peace and security to the community at large.
“Members of the public will not tolerate such violence on our officers while on duty. Assaults on police officers will be dealt with seriously,” said SSP Raibe.
