Unionist leads democracy movement

The MDAF comprises non-government organisations, trade unions and political parties.
MDF members have also established a Fund for the Restoration of Democracy in Fiji to support MDF locally and overseas in its efforts to promote the rule of law, the upholding of the principles of human rights and the 1997 Constitution.
There are two working MDF arms, the National Council and the Working Committee.
The eight organisations unanimously agreed that Mr Singh, general secretary of the Fiji Council of Trade Unions be the chairperson of the movement and its decision making body, the National Council.
Deputy chairperson is Emitai Boladuadua of the Fijian Teachers Association.
Mr Singh told a press conference yesterday said there was a need for a movement to restore democracy in the country. He said that there was a need to persuade the interim government return to a democratic system..
“We all understand the situation in the country and this is the longest term of living in the country that is not democratic and it is very sad to see that the people are suffering,” said Mr Singh.s
