The bus, owned by Tebara Transport Limited had been travelling from Suva towards Nausori at around 8am yesterday when the accident occurred.
Police Director Traffic Assistant Superintendant of Police Mahesh Mishra said it was fortunate the incident occurred after the congestion during morning traffic had dissipated.
He said the accident occurred when the bus veered onto the wrong side of the road, bumped into a taxi before veering completely off the road.
“The bus went onto the wrong side of the road, bumped into a taxi before it went completely off the road and bumped into the electricity pole,” ASP Mishra said.
“It was fortunate that the morning traffic had gone by then. If no, the accident would have been worse and lives would have been at risk,” he said.
The 12 injured passengers were taken to the Nausori Health Center for treatment.
ASP Mishra said their investigations were open at the moment and they had yet to establish the cause of the accident.
The bus driver is in police custody and the bus involved has also been seized for inspection.
“We have both the driver and the bus in our custody to ensure that we thoroughly cover all bases in this investigation.”
Meanwhile, the management of Tebara Transport yesterday said their driver was solely responsible for the accident.
“We confirm that the bus driver lost control and veered off the road hitting an electricity pole.
“He was over speeding and driving carelessly and several witnesses have attested to that fact.
“The driver is currently being questioned at the Nausori Police Station and will be charged for dangerous driving.”
The management went on to say passengers involved in the accident received only minor injuries and had been treated and released from the Nausori Health Center.
