School Mission
To educate students of Waiqele Secondary School, to become self-directed lifelong learners who can create a positive future for themselves, the community and Fiji.
Formal education started at Waiqele in 1950.
The venue for this was the old Shiva Temple site near Waiqele hotspring.
The idea of opening a school originated (because of lack of finance was the hindrance towards immediate start) in 1948.
In 1950 classes commenced in a small building (30 x 20 feet) by two streams of Class One with two licence teachers.
About 60-70 students from Sarava, Nabekavu, Navakasigani and Vuniasava received the benefit.
In the same year a committee was set up to look into the affairs of school.
In 1953 classes officially opened by District Education Officer.
Waiqele Junior School started in 1977 (the only feeder school).
Two classrooms and a Science Lab were constructed, with proper toilet, water, sporting and gardening facilities for students.
In progress double story building commenced in 1991 worth $64,750.00.
Waiqele Secondary School has gone through a lot of ups and downs.
Many troubles were faced, two major ones being the student strike in 2005 against the principal and the second, a lockout of the same principal in 2008.
The two incidents had great impact on the school community especially to students. School discipline had deteriorated and parents’ involvement in the school declined, showing less interest in the development of the school in general.
Waiqele Secondary school is located 12 kilometres south west of Labasa Town, with latitude 16.30 south and longitude 129.30 east. It is approximately 3km South of Waiqele Airport.
Education at Waiqele Secondary school is based upon core intrinsic and enduring values. Time passed and the things changed. Number of students, staff members and the physical outlook of the school changed in a dynamic pattern.
