SCF Chief Executive Officer, Chandra Shekhar said this during the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
“It has to become everyone’s responsibility,” said Mr Shekhar.
“The family has to conform to ensure the growing and nurturing environment of the child is peaceful and harmonious,” he added.
He said Fiji was ready for the concept of the Rights of the Child.
“A child’s right is not something that we may decide to accept and acknowledge.
“The mutual understanding, appreciation of the concept and interfaced communicative understanding between the child and the adult will make a difference,” he said.
Meanwhile, Professor Vijay Naidu of the University of the South Pacific said children need to be nurtured, loved and supported.
He said their basic needs should be fulfilled.
“We need to accept the fact that they have a role to play in decision making,” Mr Naidu said.
