Written By : ELLEN STOLZ. For handicraft seller, Rarawa Matayasi, the New Year brings a fresh start and a lot of opportunities.
Nadi Town has a handful of handicraft centres that sell small souvenirs and beautifully hand crafted fans and mats. These mementoes or souvenirs are designed to remind tourists of their visit to Fiji and to attract other visitors to our shores.
“I greet tourists by saying bula and I am very friendly and kind to them because I want to welcome them,” she said.
Mrs Matayasi, 50, was a housewife until six years ago when her family faced financial problems.
It was then that she decided to start working at a handicraft stall in Nadi with her cousin, Seini Dovi.
“Times are hard and nowadays women can work and earn money too so that’s what I am doing. I want to help my husband pay the bills and look after my children,” exclaimed Mrs Matayasi.
The mother of four of Votualevu, Nadi, opens her stall at 8am daily.
