The national airline is finalising plans to in May return to the eastern Kiribati island of Kiritimati, one of the world’s largest coral atolls.
It will stopover there on the way to and from Hawaii on one of its twice-weekly return flights between Nadi and Honolulu.
The flight will be of special interest to anyone interested in sport fishing. Kiritimati is regarded as one of the world’s premier sportfishing spots.
Fly fishers go there to stalk the prized bonefish on the tidal flats, as well as giant trevally. Game fishers find billfish, tuna and wahoo plentiful offshore.
If all approvals are in place, Air Pacific intends to launch its Nadi/Kiritimati/Honolulu/Kiritimati/Nadi service on 25 May.
Air Pacific, billed as the world’s friendliest airline, will use its 120-passenger Boeing 737-700 for this flight.
It will leave Nadi at 11.59pm every Tuesday and arrive on Kiritimati at 6.35am on Wednesday.
It then departs for Honolulu at 7.35am, crosses the International Dateline and arrives in Honolulu at 10.35am on Tuesday.
The return flight departs at midday Tuesday, touching down on Kiritimati at 3pm Wednesday, before continuing on to Nadi at4pm.
It arrives back at Nadi at 6.40pm Wednesday.
It will actually be a return to Kiritimati for Air Pacific. It flew there until 2008. Concerns over the condition of the runway led to stopping services there. The problem is now fixed.
Travel visas into Kiritimati Island are no longer required for visitors. But there is an immigration service charge on arrival and departure, Air Pacific advises.

Honolulu attraction
The weekly service via Kiritimati will continue Air Pacific’s expanding connections between the South Pacific and all the attractions of America’s Aloha State.
Air Pacific launched a weekly Nadi-Apia-Honolulu-Apia-Nadi service on 11 September last year.
This departs Nadi every Friday evening, crosses the International Dateline and stops in Apia before heading to Honolulu.
It arrives in Honolulu as the Hawaiian capital wakes up on Friday morning.
The aircraft then makes the return journey, arriving in Apia on the afternoon of Friday there and Nadi (after crossing the Dateline again) on Saturday afternoon.

Shopping, Shopping
Hawaii has many attractions, as befits its status as a major holiday destination.
But one of the biggest for visitors from the South Pacific is Honolulu’s shopping.
The Ala Moana Shopping Centre has been a must-visit stop for Fiji people for decades.
Other recommended shopping stops include the International Market Place, the Waikele Premium Outlets Mall, Aloha Stadium bargain days and the Aloha Tower Marketplace.
Air Pacific people tell how a member of a Fiji media group they took to Honolulu recently fell in love with the giant K Mart supermarket across from Ala Moana Shopping Centre.
She arrived in Honolulu with one suitcase, they said. She returned with three!
