Friday Night’s main event saw Rey Mysterio face off against Cody Rhodes for the final King of the Ring opportunity of the night.
And when the battle spread outside of the ring, a high-flying Mysterio accidentally landed on Del Rio, who was part of the announce team. The aristocratic Superstar would soon get his revenge, however. After the action between The Master of the 619 and Rhodes caused a collision that knocked the referee to the ground, Del Rio smashed the masked Superstar’s legs back into the steel ring post. This set up The “Dashing One” to execute the Cross Rhodes for the victory.
As Rhodes exited the ring, setting his sights on King of the Ring this Monday Night, Del Rio delivered a post-match onslaught on Mysterio.
Advance
Kofi Kingston was the first member of the blue brand to advance to next week’s prestigious tournament after he struck Jack Swagger with Trouble in Paradise in the night’s opening contest.
The second qualifying match of the night saw a confident Alberto Del Rio clash with one of the most dominant forces in WWE – Big Show.
In the end, it was Del Rio’s ring announcer, Ricardo Rodriguez, who ultimately sealed Big Show’s fate when he held onto Show’s leg outside the ring in order to prevent the giant from re-entering the squared circle.
Although Rodriguez’s actions earned him a knockout punch, the gigantic Superstar was too little too late. Del Rio’s victory by count-out allowed the “Essence of Excellence” to advance to the King of the Ring Tournament.
Shortly after stomping MVP’s arm into the steel ring steps, Drew McIntyre hit the Future Shock DDT on his injured opponent, allowing the “Chosen One” to take his place in King of the Ring.
Also on SmackDown, Edge continued to use his maniacal abduction of Paul Bearer as the ultimate mind game against World Heavyweight Champion Kane.
Kane’s search to reclaim his father continued throughout the night. And every time Kane thought he had caught up with The Ultimate Opportunist, all he found was an empty wheelchair.
When The Rated-R Superstar appeared in the crowd with Paul Bearer, threatening to launch him down the arena stairs in his wheelchair, Kane tried to appease him by offering another opportunity at the World Title. Edge accepted, but still held on to Bearer.
However, that was not Edge’s biggest hit of the night. After luring Kane out to the parking lot, The Master Manipulator drove over a fake “Paul Bearer” dummy in full view of the horrified World Heavyweight Champion. As Edge drove on, the petrified Paul Bearer could be seen, still captive in the back seat.
Coming Up
On a special three-hour Raw, John Morrison, Daniel Bryan, Ezekiel Jackson, Sheamus, Kofi Kingston, “Dashing” Cody Rhodes, Alberto Del Rio and Drew McIntyre will collide to become King of the Ring. Who will take the crown in this legendary tournament?
