The committee chairman Commissioner Western Commander Joeli Cawaki said they were focused on producing more cane this year.
“We are targetting an increase in cane production,” he said.
“There is enough land provided to the cane farmers and they are the ones whom the sugar industry depend on.”
He admitted that in the past years, the mills have not been able to deliver what was required because of the low cane supply but were now in the process of getting the farmers to be more productive.
“We had a consultative meeting with the growers’ council on the matter and we discussed statistics and cane production increasing in terms of having suitable soil and farmers planting the right variety of cane,” he said.
“We are monitoring the places that produce cane and are discussing how we can best address the issue.
“We want the farmers to speak out in terms of what they face and on how they can better their cane production because without their co-operation the matter cannot be solved and the production for the year will remain the same.”
Other matters that were also discussed concerned what the famers needed to get the increased production.
SCGC chief executive officer Sundresh Chetty said he supported the issues addressed by the committee and would help work towards achieving it.
