As members of the Labasa Cane Producers Association or LCPA they have had the sugar produced from their cane fair-trade certified.
The Prime Minister said that when he launched this initiative at the Labasa Civic Centre on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 he did not anticipate that the certification would come this soon.
“As Minister responsible for the Sugar Industry, I am indeed proud that the Labasa Cane Producers Association (LCPA) has managed to secure Fair-trade Certification in record time on 25th January, 2011,” the Prime Minister said.
“Credit must also go to the Fairtrade Co-ordinator, Mohammed Habib and his team, the Sugar Industry Tribunal, Sugar Cane Growers Council, FSC, Labasa, Commissioner, Northern, Tate & Lyle, SPC and other stakeholders for their efforts in contributing to this achievement.”
Commodore Bainimarama said by being fair-trade accredited means that all sugar produced in the Labasa Sugar Mill from 2010 and beyond will fetch a fair-trade premium price equivalent of US$60 per tonne which the LCPA itself will decide on how it is to be used.
He said this fair-trade premium price is over and above what each cane grower will receive from his cane crop that is delivered to FSC.
“This could not have come at a better time, particularly when cane growers, in recent times, have been subjected to so much hardship,” the Prime Minister said.
Government congratulates members of the LCPA for this achievement and wishes them well in their future endeavours.
