Workshop opens up new possibilities
Written By : CAROLINE RATUCADRA. Applying a dialogue approach is a way forward to resolve land issues, says Macuata participants at a land issues dialogue workshop held in Labasa last week.
The Citizens’ Constitutional Form (CCF) Limited organised a two-day workshop at the Friendly North Inn ended on Friday, March 18, which positive changes to the mindset of participants.
The 16 participants, who are key land stakeholders, comprise of landowners, tenants, Government representatives and the Native Land Trust Board.
CCF chief executive officer Reverend Akuila Yabaki said the workshop was significant as it allowed a safe space for all the key stakeholders to share views, especially under the current land reforms.
Mr Yabaki said the participants were now challenged to share what they learned from the dialogue workshop when they go back into their communities.
Representing the sugarcane growers, Mohammed Rafiq said people were now thinking of ways to use their land better.
“The participants have now realised how important land is and why it should be developed to help the economy and the nation,” Mr Rafiq said.
“At forums like this, we are able to express our emotions and feelings and listen to each other.
“Here, we try to erase the stereotype thinking that separate landowners from tenants and so on.
Even though the land issue is a sensitive subject, Mr Rafiq says land has to be shared by all for the better.
Vunicuicui land lease tenant, Nirmala Sharma said her negative perception towards landowners has changed for the better.
Mrs Sharma said they had learned to respect each another and communicate about issues before making a decision.
