The construction of $3.5 miliion in the district of Navakasiga, in Bua by a Chinese-owned company is soon expected to be completed.
Bauxite mining work at Nawailevu began last week on Tuesday and about 15 trucks have already transported loads of bauxite to Baravi near the jetty.
Acting Roko Tui Bua Jale Sigarara said the jetty was now in its final construction stages.
“Aurum Exploration (Fiji) Limited has begun extracting soil from Nawailevu and piled up many loads of bauxite at Baravi,” Mr Sigarara said.
He said the good news was that about 80 villagers have secured employment as security guards and drivers.
When Fiji Sun asked when the first shipment of bauxite to China will be, Mr Sigarara said it was too early to state.
“The first shipment for export was supposed to take place early next month but looking at the current situation we cannot provide the exact date,” Mr Sigarara said.
He said about three quarters of infrastructure work has been completed.
Moreover, he said a team from the Northern Commissioner’s office visited the site and have informed him  were two barges from China were anchored at Malau in Labasa for inspection.
“The barges arrived about a week ago and are awaiting clearance from Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority (FIRCA),” Mr Sigarara said.
He said after clearance they would transport bauxite from the jetty to the mud boat parked in the deep sea.
Northern Divisional Planning officer Alipate Bolalevu confirmed there two barges at Malau were to receive clearance from FIRCA.
He said by this week the clearance would be given.
“For the construction of 800 metre wharf, 20 meters is left to be completed,” Mr Bolalevu said.
He said if favourable weather prevails work would soon be done.
