Focus shifts to tourism for Lautoka
The Lautoka Chamber of Commerce plans to provide more night activities for the people of Lautoka and to tourists wishing to visit the sugar city.
President Pyara Singh said the chamber was always working closely with different stakeholders in Lautoka in trying to revive night activities in Lautoka as well as to attract more visitors to the city.
“With the recent visits from international cruise liners to our shores, we hope to get more activities for the tourist set up which also includes the development of probably new resorts and hotels which can cater for the tourists,” he said.
Mr Singh stressed that in order for that to happen, they needed to bring in more investors interested in developing the sugar city, as their main focus now is tourism.
- “As we see Lautoka is always quiet at night compared to the other neighbouring towns which has activities for those who like the night life.
- “They have different sorts of bars, clubs and restaurants which cater for different people and that actually brings in a lot of income for the town.
Mr Singh said Lautoka needed such activities set up so that people would always look forward to visiting the sugar city.
- “We have other projects which are in the pipeline such as the development of Marine Drive to give the city a special and superb look.
- “Also there are projects like the Botanical gardens that the Lautoka City Council has been working on which has been progressive since last year,” he said.
Despite banking on tourism, Mr Singh said they had not yet lost hope in the sugar industry for being the major income earner for the City.
He said this was because the outlook for last year had been great and they hoped that it would be better this year.
