Inter-Island Airways (Fiji) Limited representatives met with Savusavu stakeholders to tell them of the new airline’s plans to enter the domestic air service market.
American Samoa-backed Inter Island Airways (Fiji) officially applied for its air service licence on March 15. Should the licence be granted it intends to begin operation on December 1 from a base at Suva’s Nausori airport.
It plans to use fast, pressurised 19-seater Dornier 228 and Beech 1900D aircraft on flights within Fiji, with an emphasis on developing tourism markets.
Drauna Waqasokolala, from Inter Island Airways (Fiji), made his presentation to key players in the hotel and tourism industry, local business people and residents.
Savusavu people have voiced concerns over the air services currently provided to the popular tourism spot.
Savusavu tourism operators had wanted the Savusavu runway to be extended to take Pacific Sun’s ATR42-500 aircraft instead of the smaller Twin Otters now operated by Pacific Sun.
Those at the meeting with Inter Island Airways welcomed what they saw as a new and exciting initiative which they believed would bring about more frequency and competitive airfares.
Inter Island Airways (Fiji) would be affiliated with the successful American Samoan airline Inter Island Airways. This in turn is affiliated with Aviana Aviation in the United States.
Inter Island Airway (Fiji) also plans to use its 30-seater Dornier 328 turboprop on flights between Fiji and the Samoas.
From its base at American Samoa’s Tafuna International Airport, the airline is developing a network of regional flights linking the Samoas, Fiji, Tonga and Niue.
Its director of flight operations is a well known Fijian pilot, Captain Viliame Lomaloma.
