Military will prioritise constitutional process

By MAIKA BOLATIKI

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) will prioritise the constitutional process already set out by the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama as the nation prepares for the 2014 polls.
This was the message the Pacific Islands Ministerial Contact Group heard from the RFMF Chief of Staff Brigadier-General Aziz Mohammed in their meeting on Tuesday.
Speaking to the Fiji Sun yesterday, Brigadier-General Aziz said the Ministerial Contact Group questioned him about the return of the soldiers to the military barracks after a new Government is in place after the general elections.

  • “My reply to them was, we’ll come to a decision after all the constitutional processes had been implemented,” Brigadier General Aziz said.
  • “Currently the military will be monitoring the constitutional processes already set out by the Prime Minister.”

Brigadier-General Aziz said the Ministerial Contact Group did not question him on whether the military will have reserved seats in Parliament after the polls.
The Ministerial Contact Group was in Suva on Tuesday to conduct consultations with groups. They concluded that the Fijian Government is making positive progress towards returning to democratic rule in 2014.
Ministerial Contact Group chairperson and New Zealand’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Murray McCully, told Pacnews that the Government had assured that the elections would be “free and fair, there would be no restrictions on media reporting and the constitutional process would be open to all”.
It had pledged that there will be no parliamentary seats reserved for the military under the new constitution.
Brigadier-General Aziz said he was happy with the meeting.
