Two church ministers of the Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma are leading by example in making good use of the land. And the ‘men of cloth’ have issued a challenge to the congregation of the Kinoya Division as to who would reap the maximum benefits from the land in a yam competition this time next year.
Kinoya Methodist Church divisional superintendant Reverend lliesa Daveivalu and Valelevu Methodist Church circuit, Reverend Sitiveni Raikasakasa, had on display on Thursday what they produced in Valelevu, Nasinu.
“We want to start an agricultural show in the Kinoya Division next year,” Reverend Raikasakasa said.
“It’s an opportunity for the men to plant yam and let’s see who produced the biggest in May, 2013.
“Planting yams is rooted in Fijian culture and we need to continue the tradition.
“Even though we live in urban centres, we must make use of theland at home to plant yams.
“I’m optimistic next year will be big and exciting as we want to make this an annual event.”
Yams have been identified as a good source of food security because of the root crop’s durability, meaning they can be kept for long periods of time without going bad compared to other root crops.
As a result, farmers have been encouraged to grow more of the staple root crop around the country.
The Ministry of Primary Industries harvested five tonnes of yams at the Dobuilevu Research Station in Ra for distribution to interested farmers as planting material last year.
