The Samoa netball team defeated Papua New Guinea Pepes 66-48 in the last day of the 2012 LICI Pacific Netball Series at the Vodafone Arena yesterday.
The first two quarters saw the two teams tight on defence and attacking line. But they were continuously penalised by head umpire for committing basic errors. Samoa with their overseas drafts had the advantage leading 34-20 at halftime.
PNG Coach Monalisa Leka fielded in her new debutants in the last two quarters which gave the Marcia Hardcastle side a good run around. The Pepes were strong in mid court showing quick hands cutting up the Samoan attack line.
But sealed the win with a comfortable 66-48 victory.
Samoa coach Marcia Hardcastle said they stuck to their game plan.
“We did not underestimate PNG, we knew they going to be tough. But I was happy that my new girls really put up a positive performance. I really put my hat off to the defenders who were brilliant.
“My girls were solid and our team bonding was good,” Hardcastle said.
PNG coach Monalisa Leka acknowledge the PNG supporters.
“I had five debutants for this tournament and I’m very impressed with their performance. I want to thank our sponsor Pacific MMI Insurance managing director Wayne Dorgan for travelling from PNG to Fiji to support us and not forgetting our parents and supporters back in PNG
“The girls did well against Samoa even though that’s our last game but it was good exposure and experience for them.”
