The third academic school term officially begins today.
Already, the Minister for Education,  Filipe Bole, has called on teachers to commit themselves to their work and to their role as custodians of our children’s welfare.
This is the final term of the year and Form Six students will be sitting their Fiji School Leaving Certificate Examination beginning on November 5 while the Fiji Seventh Form Examination will be conducted on October 29.
“Teachers are expected to give their utmost to enable their students and schools to move a level up from their achievements in 2011,” Minister Bole said.
Secondary schools have been categorised into various achievement categories for external examinations including low performing, medium performing and high performing schools. This is to enable officials to monitor and provide the necessary assistance to those schools that require assistance.
“Teachers in low performing schools must show commitment and hard work to improve the academic status of their students and schools.
“This is your core function and other activities come in second and third priorities. For teachers in medium and high performing schools, do not rest on your laurels. Continue with the good work so to be able to attain excellence in your various subject areas. Principals are to see that there is team work and a concerted effort from teachers in achieving improved academic results for their respective schools,” Mr Bole said.
Teachers who care deeply about the learning experience of their students will not fail.
No matter what the style or methodology, students know when teachers are committed to teaching. Everything else flows from that.
We must not forget that the success of a child in the school begins at home.
A psychologist said – “Parents play an important role in their children’s ability to have academic achievement. Every parent should be involved in their children’s education. In order for children to succeed in academics, there needs to be a good foundation in place in the home.
There also needs to be routines, boundaries, support, and rules that govern the home. These components create stability and an environment that is conducive to learning and achieving success in their academics studies as well as in life in general.”
Whatever career or educational choices the child makes the parents should support and cultivate a positive mindset about them. If there is anyone that a child will trust “deep down” it will be their parents.
They are responsible for moulding their children into successful and decent adults.
Parents should make sure that when their children report to classes today they have the required school supplies such as notebooks, pens, pencils, sharpener, etc. It is embarrassing for a child to show up without the required tools to do a project in school.
Remember that it is irresponsible of a parent to send children to school unprepared.
