Tourism Fiji chairman Dave Pflieger has taken on the role of executive chairman until a new chief executive is appointed.
Tourism Fiji yesterday issued a statement saying acting chief executive Michael Meade left this role effective Friday to return to Sydney for family and personal reasons.
Mr Pflieger, the Air Pacific managing director/chief executive, will be assisted by Thomas Valentine, Tourism Fiji manager-Fiji. Mr Valentine assumes interim administrative duties until a new permanent CEO is appointed.
The statement said Tourism Fiji Board of Directors plans to conclude its ongoing search for a new permanent CEO and announce the appointment of a new CEO over the next few months.
Mr Meade, an Australian who had worked in senior management roles in tourism and aviation, joined Tourism Fiji on 15 December 2011 as acting chief executive.
He was brought in after former chief executive Jo Tuamoto’s contract ended last year and the board decided to advertise the position rather than reappoint him.
The statement said since that time, Tourism Fiji has been working hard to better position Fiji as a truly global brand.
This was shown with the appointment of new marketing and public relations partners, the design of a new brand identity, selection of a new global social media partner, and the creation of a new destination website.
Mr Pflieger said: “Michael, as the acting chief executive, has contributed much to Tourism Fiji through a period of great organisational change, and he also assisted us through a particularly challenging time following some of the worst flooding in Fiji’s history.
“The March floods presented major challenges to Fiji’s tourism industry, but we were able to re-open the country and return to positive visitor numbers in an incredibly short period of time.
“On behalf of the Board and everyone at Tourism Fiji, I would like to thank Michael for his hard work and dedicated service and wish him the very best as he returns to his family and home in Australia.”
Mr Mead said: “I have truly enjoyed the privilege of serving as acting chief executive officer during this exciting time in Tourism Fiji’s history.
“I am very proud of the many things we have been able to achieve in such a short period of time.
“Tourism Fiji is well on its way to being able to showcase an innovative and universally appealing new brand in both emerging and traditional markets, and I am proud I was able to contribute to those efforts.
“I look forward to continuing to assist Tourism Fiji and ensuring a seamless transition to the new permanent CEO.”
