Ratu Inoke Kubuabola yesterday met with the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, Sergei Lavrov.
The meeting took place in the context of the Russia-PSIDS (Pacific Small Island Developing States) Ministerial Meeting held at the United Nations.
This was a follow-up to the Russia-PSIDS Ministerial Meeting held in Nadi in January, 2012.
Mr Lavrov and Ratu Inoke expressed satisfaction at the progress of the various bilateral issues tabled between Fiji and Russia at the Nadi meeting.
Ratu Inoke said heads of government, foreign ministers and ambassadors of the PSIDS were present to discuss development issues with Minister Lavrov and the Russian permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Vitaly Churkin.
The PSIDS include Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
They acknowledged the desire of the Russian Federation and the Pacific Small Island Developing States to promote and strengthen their bonds of friendship and cooperation.
Discussions covered sustainable development, climate change, security, scholarships, communications and bilateral visa arrangements.
The Ministerial Meeting agreed to meet annually in the margins of the United Nations General Assembly during the September General Debate.
A communiqué was issued at the conclusion of the meeting.
