A Tongan rugby team will be competing in the inaugural Cakaudrove, Bua, Macuata (CBM) Vancouver 7s in Savusavu in Novemver.
The chairman of the Pasifika Rugby Promotions Incorporated of Vancouver Rugby 7s Dr Netani Gucake made the confirmation after the launching the 7s event in Tonga two weeks ago.
The CBM Vancouver 7s will be hosted at Ratu Ganilau Park in Savusavu on November 24- 26.
“It is confirmed, they will be sending a team to play in the CBM Vancouver 7s,” Dr Gucake.
“It was exciting as I personally met with the Tonga Rugby Union chief executive Epeli Taione and Ikale Tahi team manager Viliami Fukofuka.
“During the launch they were overwhelmed with what was in store for them. They have agreed to host four circuits in Tonga for the 2012 – 2013 seasons.
“Two circuits will be hosted by the Mua Rugby Union which is one of the oldest unions in the Friendly Isles.
“The date chosen to host the first tournament in Tonga is timely since all the Tongans will be at home just in time to celebrate Christmas, play 7s and fly back home. “
Dr Gucake says the inclusion of the former Digicel Fiji 7s assistant coach Etuate Waqa is a big boost for Tongan Rugby.
Meanwhile, the Vancouver International Rugby 7’s committee will meet in Suva today to finalise details.
At present Albert Sandy looks after the technical and logistics. Nacanieli Naceba is the chief operating officer while Eliki Gonelevu looks after public relations.
Dr Gucake said his team was considering the inclusion of former Flying Fijians head coach Ilivasi Tabua in their team.
