Four men charged for allegedly assaulting a tourist appeared before Magistrate Mohammed Ajmeer at the  Magistrates Court in Nadi.
The four are charged with one count of aggravated burglary, theft and serious assault.
No plea has been taken by Kinijoji Vuda, Taito Seninawanawa, Kelepi Ratu and Jone Masirewa and they have been remanded in Police custody, pending further investigations. The court heard that the four were also allegedly involved in a series of robberies between Nadi and Lautoka where they allegedly robbed the Raffles Gateaway Hotel, Trans International Hotel and Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi.
The court heard that a New Zealand tourist who had tried to fend off the robbers was seriously injured in the process and had to be airlifted back to his home country after being admitted at the Intensive Care Unit at the Lautoka Hospital.
One of the accused, Vuda, made submissions on behalf of the others and informed the court that they wished to be remanded at the Natabua Corrections Centre, adding that they had been subjected to Police brutality. This was strongly objected to by the Police prosecutor, Sergeant Subramani Naidu, who informed the court that this would hinder Police investigations into some other pending cases.
Magistrate Ajmeer reassured the four accused that they were under the court’s protection and remanded them in custody until Friday.
Another accused, Ratu was just released from a corrections facility last Tuesday and was alleged to have participated in the spate of robberies from Thursday. They are allegedly involved in eight robbery cases in the Western Division and some of the stolen items had been recovered. They were also found to be in possession of a .22 riffle which was confiscated by the Police during their arrest.
