Now here’s a great idea. Put up a flag. Put down a lovo. And celebrate Fiji Day next week on Wednesday October 10.
Permanent Secretary for Information Sharon Smith-Johns highlighted this yesterday at a media launch in Suva.
Fiji Day, we have to acknowledge, has not been celebrated here in the same way national days are overseas.
In some countries national days are huge events celebrating with pride that country’s independence.
In others they are a special day for everyone to get together.
For us October 10 should be a special day.
This is the day we regained our independence from the British in 1970. We were no longer a colony of a far off land. We became a proudly independent nation ruling our own affairs and deciding our own destiny.
Those who were at Albert Park in Suva way back then still remember the day.
They remember how we celebrated our independence and the joy of this special day. They remember how we were one people united in pride.
They remember how the British Union Jack flag was lowered and our own national flag raised to fly proudly over our islands.
Ms Smith-Johns told how Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama and his Government want to rekindle the feeling from those days as we build a better Fiji.
“This Fiji Day we want to make it special, we want all Fijians to take pride in this great country and celebrate,” she said.
“Most countries around the world embrace their national holidays and Fiji should be no different.”
As part of a national campaign in the lead up to Fiji Day, the Ministry of Information has launched an advertising campaign asking us as Fijians to “Put Up A Flag, Put Down A Lovo”.
“The idea behind this is to get everyone together, over lunch, dinner, picnics, yaqona or simply visiting relatives and friends,” Ms Smith-Johns said.
All this will flourish around official programmes in Suva, Lautoka, Labasa and Levuka.
All Fijians should join in. Put up a flag. Put down a lovo. Make our day a special day.
