The High Court in Suva yesterday heard the bail application for former Vinod Patel and Company Limited employee, Monika Arora, pending appeal.
Arora, who was convicted for money laundering and corrupt practices, was employed as the personal assistant to the managing director at the time of the offence.
Justice Salesi Temo, in overturning a not guilty verdict by trial assessors on February 17, sentenced Arora to seven years imprisonment and ordered her to serve a non-parole period of six years.
Arora was convicted for cashing $472,466 worth of cheques from Vinod Patel between December 9, 2005 and in 2007, for obtaining $472,466 and disposing of the cash for her and the benefit of others by forging Vinod Patel company cheques and vouchers.
In the second charge, on May 13, 2007 at Sports City Plaza in Laucala Bay, Arora corruptly offered $10,000 cash to an accountant of Vinod Patel Company, as an inducement to persuade the accountant to stop all investigations into the cashing of the cheque belonging to the company.
Defence lawyer Rajend Chaudhry, in his application submission, told the court that prosecution witnesses did not know who had prepared the cash vouchers and cheque.
The case has been put on notice for ruling.
