The Suva High Court yesterday extended the bench warrant for prominent businessman, Mahendra Motibhai Patel.
Justice Prabaharan Kumararatnam said two other accused in the case – Peni Mau and Dhirendra Pratap – had been appearing at court regularly while Patel had been absent.
Justice Kumararatnam turned down the request made by Patel’s lawyer, Barbara Malimali, who had asked for the cancellation of a bench warrant issued in March.
Ms Malimali said her client was currently undergoing medical treatment by eye surgeons in Sydney, Australia.
Patel, denies the charge of abuse of office.
Patel, while employed in the public service, namely as the chairman of the board of directors of Post Fiji Limited, in an alleged abuse of authority is accused of doing an arbitrary act.
Meanwhile, Ms Malimali assured that Patel would return as he would not abandon his many businesses in Fiji.
