The Ministry of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation is carrying out a review exercise of all social welfare recipients to ascertain if they still qualify for social welfare assistance or if their financial position has improved.
The Minister, Dr Jiko Luveni, said the exercise involved home visits to verify on site and through interviews that a person’s livelihood has improved.
“Those who are receiving assistance for their children’s education, are having their files reviewed to ensure that the children are still of school age and under 18. Those who do not qualify for assistance will have their allowances terminated,” Dr Luveni said.
She said through this review, about 3000 cases have been terminated and those recipients whose cases have been terminated can write to the Appeals Panel for reconsideration.
The ministry will also take to task those who try to defraud the system.
Dr Luveni has appealed to members of the community to inform social welfare officers about those in their communities who, they felt, were not entitled to the assistance.
