Rupeni Qaraniqio was a humble and caring man.
And his death a great loss to Nadroga Rugby, says Stallions team manager, Paula Biu.
“He was one of our Nadroga rugby heroes in the nine years that the Farebrother stayed in the province,”Biu said.
“He was a great player not only for Nadroga but also for Fiji.
He was a member of the Fiji team that defeated the British Lions in 1977 in Suva.”
Nicknamed the ‘spoiler’, Qaraniqio once coached Nadroga and was the manager of the team, which won the Farebrother-Sullivan Trophy and the Telecom Cup in 2004.
“He is a very quiet and humble person. From my experience he is easy to be with and always cares about the ‘vulagi’ (not of Nadroga origin) playing in the Nadroga team.
“He helps us a lot in trying to make us feel at home and fit in well with the team,” Biu said. He added it was sad to hear the news of Qaraniqio’s death.
Biu said Qaraniqio was a committed rugby player in his days, which showed when he used to run from his Cuvu village to Lawaqa Park for training and back.
“He encourages me personally, and reminds me that am not the only one from my village to be taking up the manager’s post because my Uncle Dr Mesake Biumaiwai was the first.”
