The Mediation Services Unit in Labasa under the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment celebrated their first anniversary last Friday.
Representatives from the different stakeholders around Labasa were present to mark this event.
Speaking during the celebration ceremony, Mediator Northern Sadrugu Ramagimagi focused on the importance of the services provided by the Unit to the people of North.
He added its establishment also signified Government’s efforts through the “Look North Policy” to improving services to the North.
Amrul Sharif, the HR officer for Valebasoga Tropik Boards Ltd expressed his appreciation for the establishment of such services in the Northern Division.
“Since its inception here in the North, our company has been glad to have been using the services of the Mediator in the resolution of most of our cases. What we also like about this service is that everything is confidential and the service is far more likely to preserve the relationship between the parties,” Ms Sharif said.
An employee association representative present, Alipate Seru of FFI Staff Union president, voiced his appreciation of the Unit and its work so far in the North.
“We are very thankful that such services have been brought closer to home. It has saved us a lot of time and cost because everything had to be done in Suva before. I appreciate the quick time also in the resolution of disputes which has been very encouraging so far,” Mr Seru said.
All stakeholders present also pledged their support for another successful year.
Mediation was introduced by Government of Fiji in 2008 as an alternate dispute resolution mechanism and this was established through the Employment Relations Promulgation 2007 (ERP).
The Mediation Unit (headquarters) was established in Suva on 1st September, 2008 and was officially launched on 16th March 2009.
Mediation Services were also established in Nadi and Ba in the Western Division and mediation services to the North was provided from Suva on ad hoc basis since the establishment of the Unit.
