Fijians have been urged to “press forward and open the doors of opportunity so that we can rebuild a Fiji that is non-racial, culturally vibrant and united, well governed, inclusive and truly democratic”.

The call came from the President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, during his Fiji Day message – to mark 42 years of independence.

Ratu Epeli said ultimately Fijians needed to build a Fiji “that seeks progress and prosperity through merit-based equality of opportunity and peace”.

The address to the nation was telecast live on FBC TV.
