“Today is the day for building national pride. We are one nation; together we are an effective ministry; together we will be one strong country.”
Those were the words of the Minister for Labour, Industrial Relations, and Employment, Jone Usamate, to his staff while commemorating Fiji Day.
Staff of the Labour Ministry gathered at the Civic Auditorium in the blue Fiji Day colours to recollect values and principles that make up our Fiji.
“As one people, we are one nation, basing our solidarity in love, dignity, humility, and humanity, as we all are loved by our Creator. We respect, appreciate, and celebrate the diversity and the aspirations of our people. We recognise the freedom of our various communities to follow their beliefs,” Mr Usamate said.
“We strive to live justly and peacefully with one another, in the knowledge that goodwill alone is not sufficient to sustain peace, just governance, and freedom. We accept that we must live by a set of shared moral values and standards, through which we evaluate our individual and collective conduct and performance.”
He reminded his staff of the principles that are included in the Charter, adding that these principles can be achieved through consensus.
“Our Charter principles include sustainable democracy, a common national identity and effective, enlightened, and accountable leadership, amongst others. Our people will have a moral vision that will guide our development and governance and that will give our people the responsibility to sustain the common good.”
Fiji gained independence on October 10, 1970 and Fiji Day will be observed around the country today.
