The 1-3 loss to Navua in their first game was a wakeup call for the defending champions Labasa at Govind Park, Ba yesterday.
This was after they managed to beat Tavua 2-1 in the dying minutes of their second pool game of the Courts Inter-District Championship.
Hekari United striker Wira Wama was instrumental in the Babasiga Lions keeping their hopes alive after he set up Vikrant Chandra to score the winner.
Tavua, a young and inexperienced side, scored their first goal in the 50th minute.
A blunder by Labasa captain Ilaitia Tuilau provided centre link Ravinesh Chand the perfect chance to slot the first goal.
Labasa players weren’t able to deliver and combine as a team. However a few set ups in the dying minutes enabled them to equalise through Chandra.
Striker Ilisoni Logaivau scored the Lions second goal which also gave them the three points they need to be able to keep their hopes alive.
Coach Bal Sanju Reddy was a happy man after the game.
“The boys were taking Tavua lightly but they managed to win and I thank them for the fightback,”Reddy said.
“Wira Wama is the one who stood out and made the difference.”
Tavua manager Avinesh Kumar said they played their best.
