The first night of ‘Operation Blitz’ was a success as no major road incidents was recorded on Western Division roads, says director traffic Senior Superintendent of Police Mahesh Mishra.
SSP Mishra and his team knocked off at 4am yesterday.
He said their success was achieved by ensuring that there were no road fatalities on Western Roads on Thursday, and added that he hoped this continued on the roads.
“Our mission is to note that there are zero road deaths, not only in the Western Roads but also around the country. We are also calling for members of the public to support us and to co-operate with us in making Fiji’s roads safe.
SSP Mishra also urged all motorists who drive at night to and from the Western Division to use their community posts as rest bays.
“We are there to support them and we want them to stop over and have a rest if they feel that they would not be able to continue their journey. Also, we are calling on all passengers to check their drivers properly before embarking on a journey.
“If the passenger feels that the driver is not in a fit state to drive, do not board the vehicle, it is as simple as that. We would also like all passengers to take note that if they ever feel unsafe, our police officers are also at the community posts to assist them,” he said.
SSP Mishra noted that the current death toll on our roads stands at 34 compared to 36 for the same period last year.
He said this initiative was part of Government’s decade of action plan against road fatalities.
Fiji recorded its highest road death toll for 2011 during the month of October – 10 road deaths.
Operation Blitz will continue untill the end of October and police officers will be out in numbers on Western roads to check on the safety of passengers and to ensure that there are no accidents.
