Fiji ran in six tries – three on either side of half-time – to beat New Zealand 32-14 and successfully defend their Gold Coast 7s title in the opening stanza of the HSBC Sevens World Series.

New find Alipate Raitini scored a hat-trick on debut – two in the first half with another from captain Levani Botia for Fiji to lead 17-7 at half-time.

In the second half Raitini started the scoring before Gold Coast 7s top scorer and player of the tournament Joji Ragamate got on the scoresheet with a kick-and-chase for the 27-7 lead.

New Zealand came back with a try before a brilliant individual effort from Ilai Tinai secured the victory.

Other results: Shield final – Scotland 40-5 USA, Bowl final – Spain 19-14 England, Plate final – Argentina 14-7 France, Third-place playoff – South Africa 41-7 Kenya.
