Fijian students studying in India gathered for their very own celebration of Fiji Day to commemorate the national event.
Speaking from Pune, Fiji Sun journalist Arieta Vakasukawaqa said the small celebration was for Fijian students in Pune.
The walls of the room were adorned with Fiji flags, masi and things Fijian.
Ms Vakasukawaqa is doing an undergraduate degree in political philosophy at the University of Pune, in Maharastra.
“There were more than 10 Fijian students at our Fiji Day celebration. We had the formal yaqona ceremony, and the singing of our national anthem. We also had a feast,” Ms Vakasukawaqa said.
“Everyone had a good time reminiscing about memories in Fiji while we shared a few bowls of grog amongst the students. We also had a small talk of encouragement from one of our Fijian senior students studying here in India.”
She said they were reminded to help each other as Fijian students and love one another as they were all there for the purpose of studying.
Ms Vakasukawaqa mentioned that the Fijian students in Pune had agreed to celebrate all celebrations significant in the Fiji calendar.
“We will be having more celebrations together for Diwali and other special days. It is a gathering that we all look forward to as we also get to meet old and new students from Fiji here in Pune.”
