Ghana, Fiji are friends

Fiji and the Republic of Ghana have formalised diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Ghanian Mission to the United Nations in New York on Friday.
This was confirmed by Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Mr Peter Thomson.
Mr Thomson said he had signed a joint communiqué with the Permanent Representative of Ghana to the United Nations, Ken Kanda, establishing diplomatic relations between the two developing nations.
It continues the major growth of Fiji’s diplomatic ties
The communiqué Mr Thomson said, expressed the desire of the Republics of Fiji and Ghana to promote mutual understanding and strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation among their two peoples.
“The communiqué affirms the relationship will be guided by the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and other norms of international law, particularly those pertaining to the promotion of international peace and security, the respect for state sovereignty, equality among states, independence, territorial integrity, international treaties and non-interference in the internal affairs of states,” Mr Thomson said.
Following the formalisation ceremony, Ambassadors Kanda and Thomson held talks on areas of common interest between their two countries.These included the political history of both countries, the steady progress of the Fiji Roadmap towards sustainable democracy, the cooperative opportunities available for Ghana and,the work involved in Fiji’s upcoming chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China.
